I came to UDW because I wanted an education and my parents wanted the same for me, with fees much lower, board and lodge cheaper, my father was then able to afford it. Now there’s a whole new change.
I am presently a 3rd year Political Science student at the University of Durban-Westville. I am the eldest child with 3 other brothers. My father is a clerk at a small estate agent in Port Shepstone. My mother is a house-wife. I have one brother studying at UDW and one at a Technikon. My brothers and I are living away from home. We share an outbuilding of 2 bedrooms and a kitchen, which is R400.00 rental per month plus lights and water which is R80.00 per month. Food for the entire month amounts to R150.00.
My fees are R2700.00 which my father borrowed from a relative and which he pays of a portion each month. My father has to manage 2 households and educate 3 children, this brings difficulty to our standard of living.
I do not buy books, but rather use them in the library. My father is able only to buy books for one brother as it is a must for his course.
R500.00 may seem little to some, or even little to the great expense we come across, but it will certainly help in buying books, for photocopying and for transport costs.
I know that there are more needy students out there who may deserve this money more than I do, but I hope I am considered, it will definitely help me and my family and relieve a weight off my dad’s shoulders.
Thank you very much.
