Firstly I would like to thank the USSAS Committee for awarding me with the bursary.
I have been living at the above address for the past 7 years, previously I have been living in Pheonix, Unit 4 for 10 years.  Prior to this our family was living in Chatsworth.

Family Background

I have 3 sisters, 2 of whom are registered at UDW.  The elder sister (Paveshni) is a final year social work student, the younger sister (Annaloshni) is a second year law student.  The youngest sister (Vaneshni) is a std. 8 pupil at Pheonix Secondary School.  My mother (Patchamma) is a house-wife.  My father (Krishna Govindsamy) passed away 4 years ago.

My mother receives Widow’s Pension in the region of R500.00 after deductions.  My uncle helps us financially on certain occasions.

I attended Stonebridge Primary School in Pheonix.  I was on the School Debating Team in std. 4 and std. 5.   In std. 5 I was given the responsibility of being the Head Prefect.  I was also given a book prize for 1st position in class.

I spent my entire High School career in Pheonix Secondary School.  In std. 6 I was in the Chess and Geography Club.  In std. 7 I was awarded a book prize for 2nd position in the standard.  During std. 8 I was given the book prize for Biology and I was awarded a certificate for being placed 6th in the TASA Maths 8 contest (this was a nation wide event).  I was once again given the responsibility of being a prefect during std. 9 and matric.   During matric I participated in the inter-class soccer tournament.  I also received a miniature trophy for mathematics.   During std. 6, std. 7 and std. 8 I wrote external Afrikaans Examination papers and passed all three.

After passing matric with exemption I registered for a degree in Chemical Engineering at this University (i.e. UDW).  I am presently studying towards this degree.

Community Involvement

I am presently on the Committee of the Phoenix Youth League.  This organization plays an active role in environmental awareness throughout Phoenix and recently we presented a Fun Day for underprivileged children.  Although I would like to involve myself more in the community my studies occupy most of my time.

Details on How the Grant is to be Spent

The amount of fees due by me is R2730.00.  I will be using the R2000.00 grant to pay towards this amount.  I applied for a loan of exactly R730.00 to cover the remaining costs of the fees but this has not been approved by the Loans Department in UDW yet.

I would like to thank the USSAS Committee once again for awarding me with the bursary.
