Naboth Mohale Lepholletse

no picture

I am granted a bursary from USSAS amounting to R1500.00.  The grant has been made on 28-2-92.  I am intending to spend the grant on paying the registration fee only as the said amount is insufficient to cover the university tuition fees, books and lodging.

My name is Naboth Mohale Lepholletse.  I am from a semi-rural township of Ipelegeng which is adjacent to the Conservative Party controlled town called Schweizer-Reneke situated in the Western Transvaal region.

I am the seventh child of the family of nine children.  My mother deceased in 1982 and my father passed away in 1991 due to heart attack.  The nature of his death is considered to have been enhanced by the arson attack upon my family house which burnt to ashes by what is generally regarded as the defenders of apartheid or members of the third force.

I have four brothers whom three of them are working as labourers as various factories for poor wages and the last one is serving 6 years prison sentence at the moment.  I have two elder sisters who are married and two younger sisters who are studying at secondary schools.

My brothers who are working are at the same time the bread winners of the whole family and are also assisting my younger sisters financially and otherwise with regard furthering their studies.

The achievement of my primary and secondary education was possible and realizable due to the financial assistance and the like by my father as he was an active hawker during the time of his most life.  Both my father and brothers managed to financially assist me during the years of 1987 and 1988 which I was a student at Durban-Westville University.  In 1989 and 1990 educational aid programme bursary scheme fully assisted me with the university costs.  In 1990 as a student, I suffered traumatic experiences.  For instance, I was detained without trial for 3 months under the then State of Emergency.  Few months after my release, my family house was arsoned to ashes.  My academic record was therefore jeopardized and in 1991 I did not enroll at the university.

I have served in the community based structures since 1987 at my township.  In 1989 (during university vacations) I together with fellow comrades facilitated the launching of the Local Civic Association in which at the moment has attracted majority of the township residents and therefore organizing membership for the ANC local branch.  I am at the moment the Deputy Chairperson of the Local Civic Association.

In 1991, I served full-time as a chairperson of NECC local branch.  I was also a chairperson of the area coordinating committee in which its main task is to coordinate matters of common concern pertaining to all local progressive structures.  Please be informed that in 1991, I was not studying and therefore involved myself full time and voluntarily with the activities of the said structures.  I was not working for renumerations at all.
