Pamela Mrobo

I am Ms. Pamela Mrobo, a student in the University of Durban-Westville.  I come from Katlehong township in Transvaal, next to Germiston.  I come from a family of eight, two parents and six children.  I have three sisters as well as two brothers.  One brother and one sister are in Tertiary institutions just like I am.  My father is a pensioner, therefore our only source of income is my mother, who is a teacher employed by the Department of Education and training.

When I passed matric, I studied in the Transvaal College of Education situated in Soshanguve, Pretoria, and majored in Afrikaans as well as Biology.  After passing my diploma viz. Secondary Teachers’ Diploma, I could not find a teaching post immediately.  I then decided to study further in the above mentioned university.  While studying in T.C.E., I had received a bursary from the D.E.T. which binds me towards teaching, at least for three years, in order to satisfy the needs of the contract.

Although I’m still studying full-time, I however am involved or rather usually volunteer in helping our local standard then students through teaching them Biology and Afrikaans during the university vacations.  I also am involved in facilitating the cultural group’s (drama group specifically) activities in the township so as to prevent youth from roaming the township streets without fruitful aims.

I intend to use the R1000 that USSAS granted me to pay my tuition fees up.  Although it will not help me cover the remaining/ outstanding amount, the grant will definitely help lease my mother’s responsibilities as far as tuition fees are concerned.

I am not residing in the University residence because of lack of sufficient finance.  I am boarding somewhere in town (Warwich Avenue) and have to pay rent that amounts to R250.00 per month excluding meals and transport fees.  This added R1000 into my year’s budget will really help me go a long way as far as my expenses are concerned.

I, however, have applied for other grants, but, am not sure if I’ll be successful or not.  All the same, success is getting the bursaries other than USSAS, will really be appreciated as boarding fees, travel expenses as well as money for food are still a necessity.

I hope that my statement is enough proof of how desperate I am to get more financial support in order to cope with my financial demands throughout the year.
