The University of Natal

The new University of KwaZulu-Natal unites two major educational institutions in KwaZulu-Natal - the University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville. The University of KwaZulu-Natal aims to be a truly South African university that reflects the society in which it is situated - not only in terms of race, gender and class - but in terms of how it structures its values and priorities and how it responds to social needs. As an institution of higher learning, it is committed to academic excellence, innovation in research and critical engagement with society. With its vision to be the Premier University of African Scholarship, the University of KwaZulu-Natal draws inspiration from an African identity and takes seriously its responsibilities to the development of the African continent.

The QwaQwa Campus of the University of the North

The University of the North strives to be a quality institution of higher learning and critical reflection, which is innovative responsive to change, is rooted in the issues of the society it serves, and is recognized world-wide as the centre for relevant theory and practice of people-centered development. The mission of the University is to achieve distinction in scholarship, professionalism and community renewal amongst staff and students in order to improve the quality of life of the community it serves through: appropriate focus areas of specialization; appropriate educational policies, infrastructural and physical development; creation of a culture of work, teaching, research, learning and service through adaptability and innovation; good governance and effective management, financial sustainability; and a development orientation that is rooted in the community in which we operate.

Cape Technikon

The Technikon is situated near the centre of Cape Town and access to and from the campus is easy. The friendly atmosphere of the campus makes learning that much easier and more enjoyable.

Durban Institute of Technology

The Durban Institute of Technology (DIT) formed by the merger of Technikon Natal and ML Sultan Technikon, is a vibrant multi-campus tertiary institution at the cutting edge of higher education, technological training and research. It is committed to turning out highly skilled graduates who are equipped to meet the demands of the workplace and the special needs of a changing society. DIT students also represent the demographic profile of the region, and the DIT is proactive and sensitive in promoting cross-cultural awareness and understanding in a safe environment.

Fort Hare University

The South African Native College, later the University of Fort Hare, in the Eastern Cape town of Alice has survived the apartheid era with The Higher Education Qualifications Committee.

USAID Tertiary Education Linkages Project [TELP]

USAID began to support South African development efforts in the 1980s by giving scholarships to South Africans (denied opportunities for such advancement in their own country) to further their studies at U.S. schools, colleges and universities. Since the country's 1994 democratic elections, USAID has supported the new government's efforts in several development priorities, including what may be the most ambitious education reform effort in the world today. South Africa requires a workforce with more than basic skills to be globally competitive. Providing access to higher education is a prerequisite to redressing past inequalities and is crucial to achieving employment equity, redistributing earning power in a free market context and creating new jobs.

The University of the Transkei [UNITRA]

The University of Transkei (UNITRA) has experienced rapid growth since its inception in 1976. UNITRA now has six faculties and several additional research and development institutes. The University of Transkei perceives itself as part of the family of African institutions of higher learning, firmly committed to the scientific, technological, cultural and human advancement of the African continent and the global community.

Cape Town University

The University of Cape Town is an outstanding teaching and research university, educating for life in order to graduate students who will address the challenges facing society. It is part of our mission to ensure that these ideals live; this necessarily requires a dynamic process of finding the balance between freedom and responsibility, rights and obligations, autonomy and accountability, transparency and efficiency, and permanence and transience; and of doing this through consultation and debate.

The University of the Witwatersrand [WITS]

The fundamental role of any university is to promote freedom of enquiry and the search for knowledge and truth. Wits has built a reputation for itself in this role, establishing itself at the industrial and commercial heart of South Africa as a centre for education and research of the highest quality. Wits's mission is to build on this foundation in a way that takes account of its responsibilities within South Africa today; and to maintain and enhance its position as a leading university in South Africa, in Africa, and in the world by sustaining globally competitive standards of excellence in learning, teaching and research.
